Is Eyelid Surgery Right For You?

shutterstock_159524642Skin loses elasticity as we age, affecting our whole body, even our face. Genetics may also play a role for some people who experience drooping upper lids, puffy lower lids or excess skin around their eyes. If you do not like the appearance of your eyes, eyelid surgery, also known as an eye lift or blepharoplasty, is an effective outpatient procedure that can be done under general anesthesia or under sedation. If you are considering plastic surgery on your eyes, the following are tips to aid in deciding whether this procedure is appropriate for you.

Eyelid surgery may be right for you if:

  • Drooping eyelids and puffiness under your eyes are bothering you
  • Hanging skin has started to impair your vision
  • You have dark circles under your eyes
  • You have realistic expectations about the procedure

Despite your desire to have the procedure performed, it may not be right for you. Discuss the situation with your plastic surgeon if you might have any of the following conditions:

  • An eye infection or eye disease
  • Drooping eyebrows – in which case you may benefit from a brow lift
  • Dry eye syndrome
  • Desire to remove wrinkles or crow’s feet
  • A serious infection, illness or thyroid problems

Other Important Considerations:

As with any surgery there is a time needed for recovery.  Most people take about one week to recover.  At that time, most of the swelling is gone and your sutures will have been removed.  There may still be some bruising which can either be treated with the laser to remove or simply wear concealer.  Most people are very happy with the results from their surgery as it really opens up their eyes and improves their appearance
